Substrate Options

  • Recommended:

    • Tile: Slate tiles are easy to clean and provide excellent grip. Tip: Keep extra tiles on hand to rotate out dirty ones for quick cleaning.

    • Non-adhesive shelf liner: A simple, low-maintenance option.

    • Paper towels: Super cheap and easy to replace.

  • Use With Caution:

    • Soil/Sand mixtures: A mix of play sand and organic topsoil is safe only if husbandry is perfect. Do not assume it is safe just because it is sold in stores—ask an experienced keeper first.

    • Bioactive substrate: Recommended only for advanced keepers. This creates an ecosystem within the enclosure using live plants and a "clean-up crew" of insects.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

  • Calcium sand

  • Reptile carpet

  • Walnut shells

  • Wood chips

Must-Have Items

  • Basking Platform: Recommended: slate rock. Any rock, log, or surface that allows your beardie to lay its entire body flat while basking.

  • Hides: You need two—one for the warm side and one for the cool side. Ensure they are large enough for your dragon to fit inside easily.

  • Food & Water: A dedicated dish for salad is essential. A water dish is optional, but helpful.

  • Enrichment: Climbing decor and physical stimulation are vital to keep them active.

  • Thermometers: You need one for the warm side and one for the cool side.

Note: Beardies are desert animals. They do not require a "busy" home, but they do need intentional enrichment to stay healthy and active.
